Focus: Illuminating Science

up an entire field of interdisciplinary research! Although foundational research into nano-scaled semiconductors was already underway by 1973 when Leo Esaki won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on semiconductor quantum devices, quantum dots were not recognized for their biological applications until the pioneering papers of the Alivisatos lab and the Nie lab in 1998 [1]. In these papers, both Alivisatos and Nie independently demonstrated the use of colloidal quantum dots in biological labeling and suggested that these quantum dots could provide many benefits over traditional fluorescent organic molecules, such as strong luminescence, resistance to photobleaching, narrow emission spectrum, and diameter dependent fluorescence [2, 3]. Since then, research into the physics of quantum dots has set the groundwork for the recent advances in biological imaging

lifetimes (1). Over billions of years, and as the result of a calculus we are only beginning to untangle, life evolved from simple, single celled forms into complex organisms, some of which are capable of emotion, thought, and strikingly, consciousness. But this slow march of gradual change by means of natural selection may not be that-a slow march-after all. Evolution may instead proceed throu...

nor immediate. Radcliffe College was not founded until 1879, 243 years into Harvard’s existence; it was was established as the “Harvard Annex” where women could be educated by Harvard faculty. Women were not allowed to attend Harvard classes with men until 1943. This separation of genders continued until 1977, when Harvard and Radcliffe signed a formal agreement to merge the two institutions, b...
متن کاملIlluminating Brain Activities with Fluorescent Protein-Based Biosensors.
Fluorescent protein-based biosensors are indispensable molecular tools for life science research. The invention and development of high-fidelity biosensors for a particular molecule or molecular event often catalyze important scientific breakthroughs. Understanding the structural and functional organization of brain activities remain a subject for which optical sensors are in desperate need and...
متن کاملUseful Theories Make Predictions
Stephen and Van Orden (this issue) propose that there is a complex system approach to cognitive science, and collectively the authors of the papers presented in this issue believe that this approach provides the means to drive a revolution in the science of the mind. Unfortunately, however illuminating, this explanation is absent and hyperbole is all too extensive. In contrast, I argue (1) that...
